Ancient Sindh

Sindh is an ancient province named after “Sindhu”, an old name for the Indus river that runs through the province, up on which ancient civilizations were built.   It is believed that over 9000 years ago, the earliest known settlers of Sindh originated from the east, near present day Bangladesh. Through a process that took 4000 years, these settlers formed the great Indus Valley Civilization, which spanned much of what we now call Pakistan. During its maturity at the time of the “Harappan civilization”, cities in Sindh were home to over half a million residents, with advanced sewerage systems and good city planning.

The Indus Valley civilization saw a rather quick demise. Over the course of 100 years from 1700 BC to 1800 most cities were abandoned. It is believed that this was due to the Indus Valley Civilization was attacked and defeated by the Indo-Aryan race. Another theory is that a significant change in weather lead to less rainfall, which resulted in scarcity of water.
